With firmware 3.30 and higher, widescreen (16:9) videos can have a maximum resolution of 720x480, although the screen on the PSP is limited to displaying 480x272.

How to find firmware version of a PSP

  1. Turn on the PSP or go to the PSP main system menu.
  2. Go to "Settings" (far left).
  3. Scroll to "System Settings" icon and press X.
  4. Scroll to "System Information" and press X.
  5. The screen will display the System Software Version. This is the current firmware version.

How to transfer video to a PSP

  1. Insert a sufficiently-sized Memory Stick into the slot on the left side of the PSP.
  2. Turn on the PSP.
  3. Connect the PSP to your computer using an appropriate USB cable.
  4. On the PSP main system menu, Go to "Settings" (far left).
  5. Scroll to the "USB Connection" icon in the "Settings" menu. Press X. Your PSP will display the words "USB Mode".
  6. Find the newly connected storage device (disk) on your computer and open it.
  7. There should be a folder called "MP_ROOT", if not create one.
  8. There should be a folder called "100MNV01" inside the "MP_ROOT" folder, if not create one.
  9. Open the "100MNV01" folder referenced above.
  10. Drag and drop encoded MP4 video files into this folder just as you would any other folder on your computer.
  11. NOTE: You must utilize the "Safely Remove Hardware" function icon in tray of your PC, or "eject" the drive on the Mac (drag the icon into the trash) before unplugging your PSP otherwise file corruption of your video file may occur.
